Think getting married is hard? You’re not the one who has to give the speech. To a man, everyone I’ve ever talked to that has been a best man in a wedding, and this includes myself, considered it a nerve racking and stomach pain inducing task.

Let’s face it, almost all of us hate public speaking. And no event is bigger in our lives than a wedding. With all of the money spent and planning involved, we as best men want to add something to the big day instead of subtract something with an awful speed. Here are some tips for making your best man speech all it can be.

First, make it personal. Always, and I mean always, include a funny anecdote that is personal to you and the groom. Depending how long you’ve known each other, this can be from when you were kids right up through your college years. Is the groom your brother? How about recalling an incident when you both incurred your parents wrath? You may want to steer clear of bachelor party stories on this one!

Second, keep it short and sweet. I can’t tell you how many best man speeches I’ve heard that started off great and had the crowd in hysterics, only to teeter off into the 30th minute. Five minutes is probably the longest you want to go.

Third, humor, humor and more humor! Trust me, you need to loosen everyone up with a little (or lot of) humor. It’s a tense day for everyone and humor is just what everyone needs. From the bride and groom to all of the guests, a funny joke (without being mean spirited) or humorous anecdote will get the party started.

Fourth, finish up with some sentimentality. You’ve laid the brickwork with your funny story, now have everyone in the palm of your hand with a heartfelt finish. Relate what an honor this is, how much the bride and groom are meant to each other or both. Tell everyone what a great friend the groom is to you and what a special day this is.

Finally, implore everyone to raise their glass for a toast "to the bride and groom." Follow these simple guidelines and you should be in great shape.

The most important part of a best man’s toast is the wedding speech, here are few pointers that will make your work easier.

The church and the adjoining area have been done up in pastel ribbons, lace and other decorations. Flowers like the dendrobium orchids, stargazer lilies, pink and lavender lilies have been used to decorate the altar and the pews.

On this fine morning that has been blessed by God, the sun is streaming in through the stained glass windows and the organ is playing in the background as the bride’s father escorts her up the aisle.

The couple looks lovely as they exchange their vows and rings.

Suddenly I am giddy and no longer feeling good about this whole thing. I know that within a short span of time I will have to toast the bride and the groom in front of the large crowd. My palms are clammy and I am getting cold feet too; I do not know why I agreed to this in the first place!

Sounds familiar? Well! Do not hassle yourself over this, help is at hand. It is important to remember that writing a toast does not require a great deal of creativity. With only a little bit of hard work, patience and ingenuity you will have a great toast written for the couple.

You can start off by writing thoughts about the bride and the groom and your relationship with them. You could also write down answers to simple questions like:

• Why do you think they chose you as best man?
• What are the adjectives that come to mind when you think about them?
• Was the groom different before he met the bride?
• How and where did the couple meet? What were the words/sentences that the groom used to describe her?

Once you have answered the questions honestly and written down what you feel about the couple, it is now time to use the ideas.

• Start by introducing yourself, you could do this by saying "Excuse me everyone, I would like your attention for a moment…" To get the attention of those around you could also insert a joke or a quote about marriage. It is important to thank the people who are hosting, before you go too deep into the speech.

• You could use a funny story about the bride and/or groom for the middle. As you might know the groom better, try and make the toast balanced by speaking about both of them. Try and keep the speech short and sweet, but do remember to include interesting details. Use simple sentences and words to say what is in your heart; this will ensure that you don’t go wrong.

• Closing the toast with a wish, traditional toast or blessing for the bride and groom is an excellent idea. Raise your glass with resounding congratulations, to the couple and yourself too.

• Avoid stories that are humiliating.
• Stand up straight while addressing the crowd.
• Take a quiet, deep breath before beginning, the extra oxygen will help calm you down.
• Begin the sentence with a stronger voice than you normally use.

• Make eye contact with the people you are addressing and do not read from the card, use it only for reference.

To stand and then deliver a speech in front of your wedding guests can be a nerve-racking experience if you are not prepared for one. Remember that you can read out a memorable wedding toast by being at ease, staying confident, humorous, poised and heartfelt.

Write down the speech, and as rule of the thumb, let it be short and crisp. If it’s longer than two pages, then it can be boring to the listeners.

It should start with the introduction of who you are and also how you are related to the newlywed bride or the groom. If you are a best man or maid of honor, thank the groom and the bride and their parents.

Instead try speaking as you simultaneously recollect the points in your head.

Giving the Best Man’s speech at a wedding. Is that something that fills you with dread, or is it something that you expect to do at some point in your life. What would you do if tomorrow your best friend gives you a call to announce that he is going to get married to the girl he has been dating for the last couple of years, and he wants you to be the best man.

He tells you he is confident he has made the right choice (in selecting you as his best man, not in selecting his partner for life) and will leave it up to you to come up with the perfect wedding speech. It’s a sudden announcement; the wedding is to be held in a matter of weeks. The pressure is on. How do you come up with the perfect wedding speech in such a short time? Is the Internet the answer?

Well consider this, do you think that a mass produced free wedding speech available to download from the Internet will go down well with the Bride and Groom’s friends and relatives at the wedding reception. The biggest single problem with free wedding speeches that are available on the Internet is that they are generic to try and appeal to a wide audience. The information in them is very general. Finally, if you are stuck for things to say, read out a romantic poem that is a favourite of either the bride or the groom. Let the audience know it is a favourite before you start. You may bring the entire room to tears. If so then you have delivered a perfect wedding speech.

To help you prepare for the speech, here are just a few things you should remember and advice for how to write a wedding speech.

*Prepare! Don’t try to wing it. Even if you’re quick-witted (of course you are!), even the most glib person’s mind can go completely blank without warning.

At the very least, write down a few key phrases and points to bring up if you don’t feel like writing the whole thing.

*It’s okay to be funny, but be serious. Sure those are conflicting elements, but it’s important to remember. Without a little humor, you risk boring the guests.

However, it’s imperative to remember that your best man speech is a tribute to a couple’s new life together. You can be sure that the two of them take their marriage very seriously, and they want to know that you honor that. And remember, sarcasm may be an appreciated form of humor in the right situation, but a wedding is NEVER the right situation.

*Keep it brief. Please don’t ramble on. Before the big day, practice giving your speech in front of another person. Watch them. If their eyes glaze over, you need to trim down your speech.

*Go easy on the anecdotes. Whatever you do, avoid telling stories about old wives and girlfriends, and avoid reminding all the guests about something particularly embarrassing. This won’t endear you to your friend’s new wife. If your buddy’s wife doesn’t like you, don’t expect to see much of your friend after the wedding is over.

*Talk about something you like or admire about the bride– if it’s appropriate! See the previous tip about endearing yourself to her.

*Above all, be sincere. You were chosen as best man for a reason. Remember that, and share your joy in your good friend’s happiness, and your best man speech will be remembered with thanks.
